Let’s get it started!
Cue up the Black Eyed Peas. Set the volume to 11. And crank up that much maligned and cliched song! The 2013-2014 season has begun!!
Yep, the Sochi Olympic season has begun in earnest. In years past, there was always a feeling that we would kind of ease back into training. You know let our bodies adapt. The first few weeks were relaxed, full of games and some “mandatory fun.”
However, this year was summed up yesterday when we stepped in the weight room and Shane, our strength coach, said “You all remember what to do. Let’s go!!!” We aren’t messing around this year.
Last weekend, I had the opportunity to go to LA for the NBC/USOC pre-Sochi photoshoot. I try not to use the word “epic” too often because I feel like every Snow Bro in Park City uses it describe every moment in their lives. (Sorry “bro” but standing in line at Starbucks is not “epic”.) But this shoot was epic.
The day was broken in 20 mins segments for interviews and shoots. For eleven hours, myself and my PA, Philip, ran from one segment to the other trying to make sure we were on time and hitting every studio. Philip would barge into interviews and yell “We gotta go!!!” And off we would go running to the next studio, changing on the run and Philip would give me the low down on whom I was working with next. Philip was one of those guys who knew the score and just got “it”. Honestly, without him I would have never made it through the day. Thanks bud!! Also a huge thank you to USOC and NBC for the entire weekend.
As much fun as the whole shoot was, I am glad to be back in the swing of training. There is a certain cathartic rhythm to the typical training day that I think most athletes find comfort in. You wake up, you eat, you train, you eat, you train, you eat, you sleep and you repeat. It’s not fancy but it is what we know.
We are off to the OTC in Colorado Springs on Monday for some testing and training. It will also be a good opportunity to catch up with some of the people I met in LA last weekend and make sure everything is in line for this important year.
